The Utica Jr. Comets are happy to announce the addition of Jon Ames to our coaching staff.
Jon was born in Baldwinsville and spent the latter part of his youth hockey career playing for the Syracuse Jr. Crunch. In his two seasons with the Syracuse Crunch (OPJHL) he led the team in scoring and was among the top ten in points in the league. From there Jon went to the Huskies, playing D1 hockey for The University of Connecticut. He finished his first year at UConn leading all freshman in points. Jon decided to return home and played his last two years at Utica College under Gary Heenan. Although Jon graduated from UC in 2005, a glance at the career record holders for UC still has John in the top ten in almost every category. Following Jon’s stellar college career, he went on to play professional hockey in the ECHL with the Toldeo Storm and the Phoenix Road Runners.
Jon is an experienced youth hockey coach. He currently holds a level 3 certification and coached high school hockey in the southern tier.
In addition to coaching the Utica Jr. Comets tournament bound 15 team, Jon will be returning to the Utica College ice as an Assistant Coach under Gary Heenan for the 2017-18 hockey season.
Jon has moved back to the area with his wife, Mandy, who also graduated from Utica College and was a stand out on the UC Woman’s ice hockey team. They have two children and are looking forward to their future as Jr. Comets!
